How to Cat Proof Your Yard

Cats are often very adventurous and skilled escape artists. Many will leap to the top of a 6 foot fence from a standing start and can fit through the narrowest of spaces with no trouble at all.

If you do fancy the idea of letting your cat have some outdoor time, providing an enclosed, outdoor space is a great way to keep your pet safe. The average life expectancy for an outdoor cat is only 5 years of age, while indoor cats will easily cruise through life safely until they reach the ripe old age of 18 years.

There are several commercial options for cat enclosures that can be used to secure your yard with netting. These include Catmax, Oxley Nets, Secureakat and Catnets. Tom, from Mr Petman also makes wonderful custom-built enclosures at a reasonable cost in Canberra.

If you would like to self-install, there are some excellent guidelines here and some great pictures and ideas here.

If you have a continuous fence-line, Oscillot have an amazing system that can be self-installed. The roller sits on top of the fence and can be removed if you move house.
