Information for Referring Veterinarians
Dr Eloise Bright MANZCVS (Veterinary Behaviour) is happy to receive referrals from vets in Canberra and the local region. Having performed behaviour consultations in private practice for many years, home visit consultations really are a game changer. Problems such as separation anxiety, leash reactivity, aggression, cats behaviour problems and barking are much easier to address when you can see the behaviour in action and the set-up at home. There is also less rush when there is not a busy waiting room full of people!
As a mobile veterinarian without access to a veterinary nurse or laboratory equipment Dr Eloise will always refer pets back to their regular veterinarian for additional testing. This includes blood tests, urine tests or diagnostics like radiographs and ultrasounds. If it is possible do do these prior to referral that is greatly appreciated. That being said, many pets with behaviour concerns can be scared (and a little scary) at the vet, so it is sometimes better to wait until after the pet has been assessed by Dr Eloise to get these tests performed. She will often dispese pre-visit anxiolytics such as gabapentin and trazodone to be given to pets prior to their next vet visit. This can certainly make collecting blood much easier.
After seeing a pet for a behaviour consultation, a behaviour report is sent to the referring vet (or regular vet) for your records. Usually prescriptions are given for any medications recommended during the consultation and this is available for up to 6 months. After this time it is recommended that the pet owner can go back to their regular vet for a check up and/or blood tests. If you are comfortable writing prescriptions, you are welcome to do this at their next check-up, or if you have the medications available through your practice the pet owner can buy directly from you. If you do not have the time to write prescriptions, it is not your practice policy or you don't have medications on your shelf, clients can advise Dr Eloise that they have seen their vet for a check up and she will request the vet history in order to renew any prescriptions.
If you would like Dr Eloise to visit your clinic to chat about a referral relationship, please get in touch. Of if you would like business cards posted or dropped off to your practice please advise. Otherwise pet owners can be given this website address to book a consultation online. Should you be unsure if a client needs a behaviour consultation or a trainer, Dr Eloise is also happy to assist with this, as she has contact with a network of positive reinforcement trainers she can recommend, including these.
